So how should Christians fight and war against the enemy what are the basis of spiritual warfare? A couple of years ago, it dawned on me during a church service that I needed to take a step, a really bold step if I had to move forward in the new year. The thought of doing something new was scary, but what was scarier was the thought of the battle I had to face, the battle I had fought and lost a few times. All I could ask was, Lord, why ask me to fight when all I was doing was losing?

To be sincere, I was tired of fighting for what I wanted, I just wanted things to happen, but hell no! It had to be struggle one way or the other. Tired, sad and broken on the long bench I was sitting on, the Lord said to me, ‘you are tired because you have been fighting wrongly’. huh huh! How else should I fight? Is it not to pray, pray till you win?

The Holy Spirit gave me a light, an illumination that would change the way I pray and this is what I want to share. Now how should Christians fight? How should we war and battle the enemy?

1. Don’t Fight like it is your fight: Remember what the Lord told Jehoshaphat? ‘The battle is not yours, but it is Lord’s’. You need to understand that the main reason the devil hates you is not because you are a black man or from Africa, it is not even remotely because you are a Christian (of course the devil hates that too), but the main reason he hates you is because you were created in God’s image. It is like fighting the son because of an intense hatred for the father. The devil knows he can’t get to the sit of God and fight God, but he knows God has this special soft spot for his Sons, he knows even when you were a sinner, God loves you anyway, so to get to God, to  break His heart, he is fighting you and me. Sometimes I wonder why the devil hates us so much that he wished to end us even before we were born, then I realized it is not about us, he is just too jealous because out of all God created, He chose to make us the crown and call us SONS. So the war is not directly about you.

2. You are not to fight with your strength: ‘For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.’  The Devil wants you to depend on your abilities, abilities to pray long, to fast for days, he wants you to think your long prayers will safe or deliver you, but that’s a lie. It is not just about how long you pray or how many days you fast. You can pray for four good hours and still pray wrong, you can go on dry fasting for days and nothing would come out of it. The devil won’t discourage you from praying if he knows you will pray wrong, he will encourage you to pray if he suspects you are depending on your long hours of prayer to deliver you. Your long hours of prayer will get you tired and when you are tired, you can fight no more. But you can’t be tired if you are not depending on your own strength in the first place. We are not wrestling with flesh and blood, so physical strength is obviously not needed. Rest on Jesus, use His strength to fight, no matter how many times the enemy comes at you, he will not meet you on the ground. Depending on God was the secret of David. Learn from him.

3. Fight from the side of victory: This is the most confusing part, but I trust the Lord to grant us illumination.

‘And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.’  (Colossians 2:15)

‘When he ascended on high, he took many captives and gave gifts to his people.’ (Ephesians 4:8)

‘Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.’ (Philippians 2:9-11).

In a normal battle or war, parties at war use all the weapons in their arsenal to stay ahead of their opponents, no matter how weak one side may be, the winner only emerges at the end. But in spiritual warfare, the rule is completely different. Here, we are fighting an already won battle. Oh, yea! If we have won, so why fight? We are not fighting to WIN but we are fighting to CLAIM. Christ has won the war. He has disarmed principalities and powers, He took the captives captive, then we receive a name that is GREATER than all names.

If you think you are fighting to win, the devil will continue to take advantage of you. There are many Christians spending weeks and even months on mountains with series of dry fasts because they want to win. There is no way a mortal can win the devil… no way! If a mortal can battle the devil and win, Don’t you think Some saints of old were more qualified? That is why Jesus came… to disarm principalities, why? For you and me, did he succeeded? Yes! Glory to God! Hallelujah! So what should we do? Stand, and claim the victory that has been gotten.

Get it into your spirit that whatever you are fighting today has been won by Jesus long long ago. You have been exalted with Christ far above principalities and powers… fight from there.

But remember: ‘What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate’ (Galatians 4:1)

God bless you
